Ichthys is the classical Greek word for “fish”. It is an acronym for the Greek phrase Iesous Christos Theou Uios Soter, meaning “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour”. Early Christians, under persecution by the Romans, used this fish symbol as a secret code for identifying each other and for organising worships and gatherings. Two strangers, upon meeting each other, would use a secret sequence to determine whether each is a Christian. The first would first trace an arc. If the other party is a Christian, the person would trace another arc, completing the Ichthys symbol.
Here at The Ichthys Community, we too use this ancient ritual to foster fellowship with each other. On a regular basis, one of our members will write a reflection article for all to share. This is the symbolic first arc.
Upon reading the reflection You are invited to share your thoughts by adding a comment to the article. This is the symbolic second arc.
Through these interactions, we support and strengthen each other on this faith journey of ours, bonding and molding us into the one body of Christ.
